We did it! We survived back-to-school season—barely—and now we’re diving headfirst into the holiday madness. If you're like me, the idea of decking the halls while simultaneously managing a never-ending to-do list is enough to make you want to curl up under a blanket until January. But here’s the thing: it doesn’t have to be perfect. In fact, embracing the chaos might just be the secret to actually enjoying the holidays this year.
So, how do we survive the holiday prep? Let’s talk about a few strategies to keep the stress in check and maybe even find some joy in the whirlwind.
1. Set Realistic Expectations
Look, Pinterest-perfect holidays are not real life. Accepting that not every ornament needs to match, and that dinner doesn’t have to be a five-course meal, will save you a lot of mental energy. Prioritize the things that matter most to you and your family. If that means skipping elaborate decorations for a cozy movie night, so be it.
2. Delegate, Delegate, Delegate
As parents, we often feel like we have to do everything ourselves. News flash: you don’t! Let your kids help with decorating (even if it means all the ornaments end up on one side of the tree). Let your partner take on some of the holiday meal planning. Share the load, even if it means things won’t get done exactly the way you would do them.
3. Plan Small Acts of Self-Care
Amidst all the hustle and bustle, don’t forget to carve out little moments just for you. It doesn’t have to be an entire spa day; sometimes it’s as simple as sitting down with a cup of hot cocoa after the kids are asleep or sneaking away for a 10-minute walk. Those small breaks can make a world of difference.
4. Remember, It’s About the Memories—Not the Mess
The holidays aren’t about having a spotless house or perfectly wrapped gifts. They’re about making memories with your loved ones. If that means flour all over the kitchen from baking cookies or an epic wrapping paper disaster, embrace it. Those are the stories your family will remember and laugh about for years to come.
5. Laugh at the Missteps
When (not if) things go wrong, try to find humour in the situation. Whether it’s a burnt batch of cookies, a tangled string of lights, or a kid meltdown in the middle of the holiday photo shoot, remember that these moments are part of the magic too. Embracing the chaos with a sense of humour makes everything a little easier to handle.
So, as we get ready to brave the holiday season, let’s do it with realistic expectations, a little delegation, and a whole lot of laughter. After all, the best memories are often made in the midst of the chaos. Check out my Amazon shop for some handpicked holiday essentials and gift ideas that'll make your life a little easier.Â
