The days are getting shorter, the nights are stretching out, and there’s a definite chill in the air. While winter brings some magical moments (hello, hot chocolate and fuzzy socks), it can also bring a heavy dose of seasonal blues. If the darker days have you feeling a bit off, you're not alone. It’s totally normal to feel a little weighed down this time of year, but there are ways to make it through—and maybe even find some comfort along the way.
Here are a few cozy coping tips that help me embrace the colder months while keeping the seasonal funk at bay.
1. Soak Up That Sunlight (or Fake It if You Have To)
When daylight’s in short supply, getting outside—even if it’s just to feel the cold air on your face—can make a world of difference. Try to catch a few rays during lunch breaks, or position your favourite chair by the window for a mini “sunbathing” session. If the real deal is hard to come by, bring a little extra light inside with a therapy lamp. It’s not quite a beach vacation, but it does help to brighten the mood.
2. Create a Routine That Feels Like a Warm Hug
Consistency can be comforting when everything outside feels a bit gloomy. Set up a daily rhythm that includes little rituals you actually enjoy—like making your favourite cup of tea every morning, lighting a candle before bed, or taking a 5-minute stretch break. Think of it less like “sticking to a schedule” and more like wrapping yourself in a daily blanket of familiarity.
3. Get Moving (Even if it’s Just a Wiggle)
When it’s chilly outside, curling up under a blanket is way more appealing than working out, and that’s okay. Start small. Do a few stretches in your cozy PJs, or put on a fun playlist and dance around the kitchen. Even little bursts of movement can send a jolt of feel-good energy through your body. Think of it as shaking off the winter blahs, one wiggle at a time.
4. Stay Connected, Even If It’s from the Couch
The colder months can make you want to retreat into hibernation mode, but reaching out to a friend or family member can be as comforting as a warm blanket. Catch up over a virtual coffee, send a funny meme, or just check-in. Sometimes, knowing someone’s there—even if you’re both bundled up miles apart—makes all the difference.
5. Let Yourself Feel All the Feels
Some days, the seasonal slump hits harder than others, and that’s okay. It’s perfectly normal to have days where you just want to stay in bed or binge-watch your favourite comfort show. Allow yourself to feel those emotions without judgment. Cry if you need to, nap if you want to. You’re not “failing” at winter—you’re just being human. And that’s more than enough.
Remember if you’re feeling the weight of it or just need to vent about the stress of the season, there's always Dashing Dad After Dark and our community to help. If you miss DDAD don’t forget you can always submit on the website. This is a safe space where you can share what’s on your mind—no judgment, just real talk and community support.
Seasonal depression can be a tough nut to crack, but adding a little extra comfort and gentleness to your daily routine can help you ride out the darker days. Be kind to yourself, lean into the cozy moments, and know that brighter times will come again. Until then, let’s just keep our fuzzy socks on and take it one day at a time.
