Free things to do in Calgary this January

Winter in Calgary doesn’t mean staying indoors—it means layering up, grabbing a hot chocolate, and getting out to enjoy everything the city has to offer. From skating under the lights to cultural celebrations and hands-on kids’ activities, there’s no shortage of ways to make the most of the season. Here are some of the best free winter events and experiences happening around Calgary this January 2026.

Chinook Blast

Where: Eau Claire Plaza When: January 30 – February 16

Chinook Blast is back, and it’s one of Calgary’s biggest celebrations of winter culture and community. This city-wide festival showcases local art, music, theatre, sports, and recreation, all while highlighting the civic pride that makes Calgary what it is. Whether you’re popping by for a quick visit or making a full day of it, Chinook Blast is a must-see winter highlight.

East Village Hygge Hut

Days: Friday – Sunday Times:

  • Friday: 2pm – 6pm

  • Saturday, Sunday & Holidays: 11am – 5pm

The Hygge Hut in East Village is all about embracing winter coziness. With firepits lit and welcoming visitors until March, it’s the perfect spot to slow down, warm up, and enjoy the season—whether you’re meeting friends or just taking a winter stroll.

Southwood Winterfest

Where: Southwood Community Centre Who: All ages

Celebrate winter with a full afternoon of family-friendly fun at Southwood Winterfest on January 10th. Expect crafts, music, sleigh rides, firepits, and plenty of hot chocolate. There’s skating too—with free skate rentals—making it an easy and affordable way to get everyone involved. It’s all about community, connection, and kicking off the New Year together.

Lunar New Year: Contemporary Kids Program

Ages: 5–12

This January 18, kids can take part in a creative workshop celebrating Lunar New Year in partnership with the Calgary Chinese Cultural Centre and Artistry Unite Association.

A playful paper-collage session in collaboration with local children’s illustrator Vanja Kragulj. Kids will create vibrant moths and butterflies using cut-paper techniques, exploring shapes, patterns, and symmetry. Together, we’ll think about the new year as a time of beginnings, growth, and renewal — just like the gentle transformation of moths and butterflies.

Pop-Up Curling on St. Patrick’s Island

Try your hand at one of Canada’s most iconic winter sports on the synthetic curling rink at Confluence Plaza on St. Patrick’s Island, near the Calgary Zoo parking lot. Play solo or in teams, make your own rules, and just have fun with it.

Don’t miss the Cabane à Curling pop-ups either—curling, maple taffy, and a crackling bonfire combine for peak winter vibes.

University District Winter Events

As Calgarians, we know winter won’t stop us—and University District is fully embracing the season. Bring your skates to the Central Commons Park outdoor rink and enjoy live entertainment, warm fire features, and a few fun surprises along the way.

Highlights include:

  • Live ice carving demonstrations

  • Complimentary s’more kits (while supplies last)

  • DJ performances

When: January 26 & February 16, from 1–4pm

Winter in Calgary is what you make it—and with events like these, there’s plenty to look forward to. Whether you’re skating, creating art, celebrating culture, or just warming up by a fire, there’s something for everyone to enjoy and tons of free things to do in Calgary this January.
