If your child is starting a forest school program in or around Calgary, congratulations — they’re in for an unforgettable experience! Forest schools promote hands-on learning, confidence, and a love for the outdoors. But if you’re new to the idea, one of your first questions is probably: What exactly do I pack for a day outside in Calgary’s ever-changing weather?

Here’s your ultimate checklist to make sure your little one is prepared, comfortable, and excited to explore — rain, shine, or snow.

Year-Round Essentials

These items will go with your child no matter the season:

  • Backpack: Choose one that fits your child properly and can withstand a bit of dirt and rain. A chest clip helps keep it in place.

  • Water bottle: A durable, leak-proof bottle they can open and close themselves.

  • Healthy snack and lunch (if required): Pack in reusable containers with a cloth napkin. Keep it simple, nutritious, and easy to eat outdoors.

  • Sunscreen and bug spray: Apply before school. Some programs allow kids to carry their own if they're old enough.

  • Change of clothes: Accidents, puddles, and mud happen. Pack a full extra outfit in a large ziplock or wet bag.

  • Plastic or waterproof bag: For storing muddy clothes after a day of fun.

Clothing by Season

Spring/Fall Layers (which in Calgary can also mean… mid-June or late September!):

  • Waterproof rain jacket and pants

  • Insulated mid-layer (like a fleece or puffy jacket)

  • Long-sleeve base layer (preferably wool or synthetic — skip cotton)

  • Waterproof boots or lined rubber boots

  • Wool or thermal socks

Winter Gear:

  • Insulated, waterproof snow pants and parka

  • Thermal base layers (again, avoid cotton)

  • Neck warmer or balaclava (scarves can be a hazard)

  • Waterproof, insulated gloves or mitts (send an extra pair if possible)

  • Wool hat or toque that covers the ears

  • Winter boots rated for cold temperatures

Summer Gear:

  • Wide-brimmed hat or baseball cap

  • Breathable, long-sleeve shirt for sun and mosquito protection

  • Lightweight pants (to protect against ticks, bugs, and rough terrain)

  • Closed-toe shoes or sturdy sandals with ankle straps

  • Extra sunscreen in their backpack (check school policy first)

Optional But Helpful

  • Hand warmers: Great for cold days, especially in mittens or boots.

  • Gaiters: Help keep snow, mud, and debris out of boots.

  • Nature journal and pencil: Some programs encourage kids to document their discoveries.

  • Mini flashlight or headlamp: Fun in winter when daylight hours are shorter.

Final Tips for Parents

  • Label everything. Yes — everything. Forest school kids are excellent at sharing… unintentionally.

  • Let them get dirty. It’s part of the fun, and a huge part of the learning.

  • Invest in quality gear where you can — but don’t stress. Consignment shops, outdoor gear swaps, and hand-me-downs are gold.

With the right gear, your child will be free to focus on what really matters: connecting with nature, building confidence, and making muddy memories. Happy forest schooling! See my curated Amazon list with product recommendations here.
