Summer doesn’t always require a full vacation—sometimes a change of scenery for the day is all you need. If you’re craving new adventures but not the cost or chaos of overnight travel, these easy day trips from Calgary are perfect for kids, parents, and even grandparents.

All of these are under 90 minutes from the city and packed with opportunities for connection, movement, and memory-making.

Bragg Creek

Location: About 45 minutes west of Calgary

Cost: Free + optional treats

Website: visitbraggcreek.com

Details: Explore the gentle trails at Bragg Creek Provincial Park, wade in the Elbow River, then grab ice cream or check out artisan shops. Ideal for toddlers and strollers, with shady picnic areas and calm vibes.

Big Hill Springs Provincial Park

Location: 15 minutes northwest, near Cochrane

Cost: Free

Website: albertaparks.ca

Details: This park is a local gem with a short loop hike, waterfalls, and lots of spots for kids to splash and explore. The terrain is doable for young walkers, and the creek is shallow enough for supervised play.

Okotoks + the Big Rock

Location: 10 minutes south of Calgary

Cost: Free

Website: okotoks.ca

Details: Climb on the famous glacial erratic known as the Big Rock, then head into town for a walk by the Sheep River, a splash in the spray park, or a visit to local cafés and playgrounds.

Barrier Lake, Kananaskis

Location: About 1 hour west via Hwy 1

Cost: Kananaskis Conservation Pass required

Website: kananaskis.com

Details: Perfect for families who love nature but don’t want a hardcore hike. Flat paths, shallow water areas, and beautiful mountain views make this a go-to for little explorers. Bring water shoes and a picnic.

Cochrane Ranch & Ice Cream

Location: 30 minutes northwest

Cost: Free

Website: cochrane.ca

Details: Spend the morning playing at Cochrane Ranch Historic Site (lots of trails and climbing structures), then head to MacKay’s Ice Cream—a Calgary-area classic. Small-town charm without the long drive.

Packing List for Day Trips with Kids

These trips don’t need to be Insta-perfect. A successful day is one where your kids discover something new, your body moves, and nobody cries the whole way home (parents included). Adventure is closer than you think.
